THE NEW TOYOTA SUPRA IS ABOUT TO MAKE ITS WORLDWIDE DEBUT, AND HOT DAMN WE CAN’T WAIT

Toyota partnered with BMW in 2012 to co-develop the companies’ rear-drive sports cars, and after BMW previewed the upcoming Z4 at a Monterey Car Weekunveiling, Toyota should take its turn introducing the new Supra at the Tokyo Motor Show press preview October 25.

Prototypes of the upcoming Supra have been captured testing at the Nurburgring, and Toyota previewed its thinking on sports car styling with the FT-1 concept car in 2014, so we’ve got a pretty clear idea what to expect.

SupraMKV.com also says that a leaked BMW document indicates that the Bavarians will supply two versions of the company’s turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine and its 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder for use in the Supra.

That sounds like two engines more than are needed, and the straight six would be a wonderful return to the Supra’s heritage of using such silky-smooth powerplants.

Autocar magazine reports that the Supra could potentially get a hybrid electric drivetrain to echo that in the company’s race cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. If true, this could be a sad throwback to the company’s decision to power the Lexus LF-A sports car with a V10 in tribute to its Formula One racers.

Formula One ditched its V10 engines before the LF-A reached showrooms, and Le Mans organizers are similarly re-thinking their current costly hybrid drivetrain regulations in the face of the departures of the Porsche and Audi factory racing programs.

We’ll find out for sure at the new Supra concept’s introduction in a few short weeks.
