Super foods are a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Super foods are found all over the world, but are commonly consumed in areas where people live well into old age. We know about most of them, like nuts, blueberries and salmon, but there are so many other delicious super foods that we can eat that will make us feel satisfied and healthy, so that we don’t reach for sugary snacks!
Some fantastic examples of super foods include Acai – a purple berry-like food that is great for weight loss and ant-aging, Goji berries – a berry containing a lot of vitamin C, Cacao – a powder that is good for blood pressure, seaweed – high in omega-3, chia seeds – full of fibre, calcium and omega-3, Maca powder – boosts energy and hemp seeds – high in protein and good fatty acids.
In September 2015, famous chef Jamie Oliver travelled the world to found out what makes people live long and healthy lives. He found that not only do super foods play a vital role, but that it’s about the “full package”, including family, friends, community, low stress and sharing good food as well as living an optimistic life and getting plenty of sleep!
It’s your diet that you can start with, however. By incorporating super foods into your daily consumption, you will find that you start to eat less and less bad carbohydrates and sugary foods that don’t do our bodies or the scale any good. You will also sleep better and feel more energetic on a day to day basis – like you can live until you’re 100.
Eric Roth wrote in the screenplay for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, “For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules in this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it … I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start again.”
Many of us are not living lives that we are proud of. We opt for unhealthy foods that are convenient, watch the scale steadily creep upwards and feel tired and sluggish most of the time. Our days of feeling fit and healthy seem long behind us.
But it is never too late to start again. No matter what age you are at now, you can turn it around and give your body and yourself the gift of super foods, the gift of vitality and the gift of health.
